Os The Sound foram uma banda britânica do pós-punk, formada em Londres, em 1979, com ex-membros dos The Outsiders.

A banda original era constituída por Adrian Borland (guitarra, vocais), Graham Bailey (baixo), Michael Dudley (bateria) e Bi Marshall (saxofone, clarinete e teclado); este último seria substituído por Max Mayers, já no segundo álbum From the Lion's Mouth, (1981).

O som dos Sound enquadrava-se no mesmo género musical de bandas como Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes ou The Chameleons.

Após o fim da banda em 1987, Adrian Borland seguiu a sua carreira a solo, paralelamente a outros projectos de grupo (The Honolulu Mountain Daffodils e White Rose Transmission), mas devido a frequentes depressões, suicidou-se em 26 de Abril de 1999, na estação de metro de Wimbledon. Max Mayers morreria de sida em 1993. Os restante membros afastaram-se da música.

Yo La Tengo é uma banda norte americana de rock formada em 1984 em Hoboken, Nova Jersey. É composta por Ira Kaplan (vocal e guitarra), Georgia Hubley (vocal e bateria), Dave Schramm (guitarra) e James Mcnew (baixo).

Composta originalmente por Ira Kaplan, e sua esposa Georgia Hubley, a banda colocou um anúncio procurando outros músicos que compartilhavam seu gosto musical pelos The Soft Boys, e Mission of Burma e Love de Arthur Lee. Um número considerável de baixistas e guitarristas passaram pela banda nos seus primeiros anos. Apesar disso, os membros pareceram estabilizar-se com a entrada do guitarrista Dave Schramm e do baixista Mike Lewis, durante as gravações do álbum Ride the Tiger, de 1986.

Pouco antes do lançamento do primeiro álbum, ambos Schramm e Lewis saíram da banda, deixando Ira Kaplan responsável pela guitarra e Stephan Wichnewski entrou em 1987 como baixista da banda. Schramm retornou mais tarde em 1990, nas gravações do álbum Fakebook. Um novo baixista, James Mcnew, apareceu nas gravações do EP May I Sing with Me.

Estes integrantes faziam parte de uma "comuna" composta por mais ou menos uma dezena de indivíduos de mesma orientação intelectual. A Crass foi das primeiras bandas a incorporar ativismo e idealismo político anarcopunk em suas músicas e shows. Foi também pioneira do estilo faça-você-mesmo na composição de seus trabalhos, slogan que orientaria toda contra-cultura punk, que então surgia.
